History

The Human Resources Management Association of Lethbridge began in 1975 as the Lethbridge Personnel Association. Informal discussions let to the organization of the Association with founding president, Gerry Hopman, and founding members Norm Pickard, Clint Dunford, Gower Kennedy, Dwight Jensen, Al Liptak, Nick Alvau, Steve Jermyn and Bert Assen.

The first constitution invited individuals whose primary job responsibilities were in the personnel and labour relations area to become members. Membership remained relatively small for the first few years.

The size of the Association did not prevent the Association from becoming active in sponsoring seminars, lobbying on proposed government labour legislation and changes to the Workers’ Compensation Act, and initiating and participating in local salary surveys. The Association’s "Salary and Benefit Survey", started in 1985, has been used extensively in Southern Alberta.

In November 1990, the Association became the "Human Resources Management Association of Lethbridge". The Bylaws were amended to allow the Association to broaden its exposure and influence in the local Human Resources field. Membership categories were expanded to include, as Associate members, those individuals with a background in Human Resources, educators in the field, consultants/job placement agencies or anyone providing Human Resources management services to employers on a full-time basis. A Code of Conduct for membership was also adopted in the new set of bylaws.

In January 2010, the Human Resources Management Association of Lethbridge joined the collaborative effort of several Human Resources Associations across the province including; Human Resources Institute of Alberta, Central Alberta Human Resources Management Association, the Human Resources Management Association of Edmonton and the Peace Region Human Resources Management Association. Through this movement to Collaboration, one single membership (administered through HRIA) allows an individual to benefit from membership and services from all participating associations.

The Human Resources Association of Lethbridge continues to provide an opportunity for those in Human Resources to advance their knowledge and professional development.
