The HRMAE Board of Directors has called a Special Meeting in conjunction with the AGM on December 11, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Radisson South.
The purpose of the Special Meeting is to put a motion forward to members of the HRMAE to dissolve the organization. Once dissolution is complete, the HRMAE will transition and become a Chapter of the HRIA.
This is the final step in becoming One Association. If you are a Certified Member, we request that you make it a priority to attend this meeting. We require a minimum of 35 Certified Members to vote on the motion.
How did we get here?
Numerous restructuring talks have occurred over the past thirty years as past leaders have examined the redundancies in our mandates and service delivery. The most recent merger proposals occurred in 2006 and 2003 which eventually led to the current collaborative service model.
In 2007 members voted 92% in favour of pursuing collaboration with the HRIA. In March 2011 the HRMAE, along with the other provincial associations signed a collaboration agreement.
Under this model the HRIA is viewed as the certifying body for the province of Alberta, while the regional associations and chapters are seen as the provider of local services for networking and professional development. Under collaboration, the HRMAE has remained as a not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies Act.
The current model has effectively moved us toward eliminating much of the overlap in administrative overhead but our external stakeholders continue to experience confusion when they look to engage with the HR profession.
How did the HRMAE Board come to this decision?
Over the last twelve months:
What is the next step?
The next step is to become a Chapter of the HRIA. This will complete our journey to becoming One Association. To achieve this, we recommend dissolving the HRMAE and transferring our assets to the HRIA.
How do we accomplish this?
First, the motion for dissolution must be put forward to the members of the HRMAE (North Central Region). This is occurring at the Special Meeting on December 11th, 2012. If the motion is passed, the HRMAE will close any financial commitments and transfer assets to the HRIA.
What does the future look like?
Becoming a Chapter has many benefits including more consistency in member services delivered in the region, more connectivity to provincial initiatives and a pooling of resources to enhance the Human Resources profession in Alberta.
The Edmonton Chapter will operate under the strategic direction of the HRIA. Our Chapter will provide input through a number of advisory committees that will represent our regional needs and identity. There will also be an Edmonton Representative elected to the HRIA Board of Directors.
We expect that over time, members in the North Central Region will see an increase in service delivery.
