NPPA Exam Information

  • There are 65 scenarios, out of which 5 are pretest questions that are placed randomly in the exam and that are not scored. Marking is 1 point for the most likely response and 0 points for the remaining three answers (1/0/0/0).

  • You are not deducted for incorrect answers so be sure to answer every question.

  • Go to www.chrp.ca to download practice questions and answers.

  • The incidents are based on the Required Professional Capabilities (RPCs) relating to experiential knowledge. Examples of experiential knowledge include: choosing the most effective training objectives; how best to manage a sexual harassment charge involving a senior executive; and choosing the right individual from a pool of qualified applicants for a very strategic, high-profile position.

  • The below percentages provide guidelines on the extent to which each functional dimension is emphasized within the NPPA:
19.8 % Professional Practice
16.5 % Employee & Labour Relations
16.5 % Total Compensation
15.4 % Organizational Effectiveness
12.1 % Staffing
10.9 % Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness
8.8 % Organizational Learning, Training & Development
100.0 % Total
  • The intent of the NPPA is to measure the depth of your experience. Text books will not provide answers to the questions on the assessment as they reflect real life incidents and what your peers felt was the most appropriate way of handling the situation.

  • It is recommended that you set up informal study groups with others taking or thinking about taking the assessment. The groups should discuss critical incidents that group members and their colleagues have encountered over the years, how the incidents were dealt with and if there was a better way of handling the situation. You may find differences of opinion in your group. These differences should be reviewed and discussed to determine the most ethical and best course of action based on HR principles.

  • Talk to more senior HR professionals about experiences that really stand out for them. Ask them how they solved the challenges, if the approach was ultimately the best one and if not, what could have been done to make it more successful.

  • There is a list of text books on the CHRP website. They have only been listed as a guide if you do not have any text books of your own. Text books should only be required if there are areas of HR you have not dealt with recently and want to re-familiarize yourself with them.
