National Professional Practice Assessment

The National Professional Practice Assessment ® (NPPA) assesses one’s understanding of the RPCs as they relate to experiential knowledge. Experiential knowledge is implicit and much more difficult to quantify or describe effectively. It refers to the wisdom gained from experience and insight in applying academic knowledge to actual or simulated situations.

The new NPPA consists of 65 scenarios based on “critical incidents” experienced by real world HR professionals, including five scenarios which have been added to each exam to allow the CCHRA to pre-test new questions. Pre-test questions will not affect the score and are used in examinations as an effective and legitimate way to test the validity of future examination questions. They are placed randomly throughout the exam.

The situational judgment technique presents the CHRP Candidate with a description of a practical situation an HR professional may encounter. The Candidate is then asked to select the most effective action the HR professional should take to deal with the situation, with each response worth one point. The passing grade is different for each exam session.

CHRP Candidates must pass the NPPA within 5 years of passing the National Knowledge Exam ® (NKE)

IMPORTANT CHANGE - NEW DEGREE REQUIREMENT: As of January 1, 2011, CHRP Candidates – those who have passed the National Knowledge Exam ® (NKE) - require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in order to register for the National Professional Practice Assessment ® and qualify for the CHRP designation. Official transcripts are required for proof of degrees.  For transcripts to be considered official, they must come directly from the school to the HRIA office via mail or courier. A recognized degree granting institution is any provincially approved university within Canada; or in the case of foreign degrees, any degree approved by Alberta Advanced Education’s International Qualification Assessment Service.  A copy of your IQAS must be sent directly to the HRIA office from the institute to be used as proof of degree.
