Experience Requirement- FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:  Validation of Experience

1. Why is there now a national requirement for professional experience in human resources in order to obtain the CHRP?

A number of provinces have had varying experience requirements for years.  The introduction of a standard national requirement ensures that individuals who are granted the CHRP designation have both the knowledge and experience to practice in the field of human resources.  It also ensures that a common standard is met across the country.  The CHRP experience requirement is established in compliance with the national guidelines of the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA).

2. What is the work experience requirement for CHRP?

Candidates must have three years of professional level HR experience relating to a minimum of two of the seven Functional Dimensions outlined in the CHRP Body of Knowledge.  In addition, the experience must be obtained within the last 10 years.  Two years of verifiable foreign experience will be accepted, with a minimum of one year verifiable Canadian experience required.

3.  Who does this requirement apply to?

All members who become a CHRP Candidate after January 1, 2013, will be required to demonstrate three (3) years of approved professional HR experience in order to attain the CHRP designation.

4. What is considered professional work experience?

Professional HR Experience refers to experience gained through intermediate and senior level positions of influence involving independence of action and decision making, depth of analysis and interpretations, and responsibility and accountability for outcomes. Professional does not simply mean supervisory or managerial. Human resources positions performing administrative functions are not considered to be professional level; time spent in these positions will not be credited towards the experience assessment.

5. What are the Functional Dimensions?

The CHRP Body of Knowledge outlines seven functional dimensions: Professional Practice in Human Resources; Organizational Effectiveness; Staffing; Employee and Labour Relations; Total Rewards; Organizational Learning, Development and Training; and Occupational Health and Safety.

Individuals are expected to demonstrate a breadth of experience in at least two of these functional dimensions.  As the field of HR is so significantly broad, it is not required to have any specific type of experience in any particular functional dimension.

6. Must I have a management title to satisfy the work experience requirement?

No.  Your experience is not dependent on your job title. Experience is reviewed based on the Required Professional Capabilities, which may be demonstrated in a variety of different positions.

7. How can I know what job opportunities will meet the work experience requirement?

The human resources field is very diverse and presents many opportunities to obtain both a breadth of experience and a specialization.  Each individual experience submission presents a unique background and set of accomplishments. We recommend reviewing the CHRP Body of Knowledge to ensure your current position and any others you might consider, aligns with the competencies set out for an HR professional.  Remember, you will need to show evidence of experience in at least two functional dimensions.

8. Who assesses the work experience?

Experience is reviewed by a panel of CHRPs who have been selected for their expertise in various employment sectors. Work experience submissions are also subject to audit by a committee.

9. When do I need to meet the work experience requirement?

You must meet the experience requirement prior to registering for the NPPA exam.  Your application for validation of experience must be submitted as outlined in your provincial association’s guidelines.

10. When and how do I submit my experience for review?

HRIA’s guidelines for experience submission will be posted on the website in 2012.

11.  I already have my CHRP.  Does this requirement apply to me?

No.  Those with their CHRP already are not affected by this new experience requirement.

12.  Is the degree requirement in place along with the experience requirement?

Yes, the degree requirement still applies to CHRP Candidates; one needs to complete a degree and have their university mail us their official transcripts before they can register for the NPPA.  In addition, the 5-year window between exams is still in place.
