Types of Membership

Associate Member

As an Associate Member, you must meet one of the following criteria:

 Route 1

Pursuing a recognized post secondary degree and have at least three years of professional HR experience gained within the past five years.  Eighty percent of your work day must be spent performing Professional Human Resources Functional Capabilities.

 Route 2

Pursuing a recognized post secondary degree, completion of an HR related certificate or diploma, and have at least one year of professional HR experience gained within the past three years.  Eighty percent of your work day must be spent performing Professional Human Resources Functional Capabilities.

 Route 3

Completion of a degree from a recognized degree granting institution.

A recognized degree granting institution is any provincially approved university within Canada; or in the case of foreign degrees, any degree approved by Alberta Advanced Education’s International Qualification Assessment Service

Professional HR experience refers to experience gained through intermediate and senior level positions of influence involving independence of action and decision making, depth of analysis and interpretations, and responsibility and accountability for outcomes.  Professional does not simply mean supervisory or managerial.  Human resources positions performing administrative functions are not considered to be professional level; time spent in these positions will not be credited against the experience assessed in your Application for Membership.

There are two paths to obtaining your CHRP designation:

Route 1 or 2 = No degree upon application to HRIA -> write the NKE -> complete your degree -> write the NPPA -> CHRP granted.

Route 3 = Degree completed prior to application to HRIA  -> write the NKE -> write the NPPA -> CHRP granted.

Upon successful completion of the National Knowledge Exam (NKE), you will be required to complete a degree (if you do not already have one) and pass the National Professional Practice Assessment (NPPA) within five years.

IMPORTANT CHANGE - NEW DEGREE REQUIREMENT AS OF JANUARY 1, 2011

As of January 1, 2011, CHRP Candidates – those who have passed the National Knowledge Exam ® (NKE) - will require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in order to register for the National Professional Practice Assessment ® and qualify for the CHRP designation.

NEW: The CCHRA approves a one-time exception to the requirement to any CHRP Candidate who has attempted the National Professional Practice Assessment® (NPPA) at least once prior to December 31, 2010. If you do not pass the NPPA before this date, you will be granted a chance to re-write the exam, even if you do not have a degree. However, this exception is only valid for the May 2011 NPPA session.

Associate Members are the only members who are eligible to write the National Knowledge Exam.  If you would like to obtain your CHRP, you must first be approved as an Associate Member of the HRIA.
