CHRP Designation
Recertification

The CHRP designation is a nationally recognized level of achievement signifying that a practitioner meets specific professional criteria, keeps current in the field, and adheres to a professional Code of Ethics. Recertification represents your commitment to continuous learning in a profession that is constantly evolving and is impacted by economic, social, business and legislative changes.

As a CHRP holder, you are required to re-certify every 3 years through your provincial HR association (HRIA). In addition to staying current in the HR field you must maintain your membership in the provincial HR association by paying membership dues. There are 2 options available upon recertification:

1. Re-certification through Professional Development Activities

Should you choose to re-certify by engaging in professional development activities, you will be required to acquire 100 points of professional development activities and experience from one or more of the development categories listed (continuing education, instruction, leadership, new work projects/initiatives, and research/publication).

Click here for important information regarding the New National Recertification Log Implementation. You will have to be logged in into your profile to view the new log.

Points will be assigned to each type of professional development activity - details of the number of renewal points assigned to each activity are available on the National Recertification Log. Some examples of professional development activities include, but are not limited to:

  • attending seminars or conferences
  • taking a college or university course in a field of HR or related
  • undertaking self-directed learning
  • developing and/or facilitating a college or university course or professional workshop
  • providing leadership services such as mentoring
  • holding a board or committee position in an HR association/organization
  • participating in 'new work' projects/initiatives that gain greater understanding of the HR body of knowledge
  • conducting research on an HR topic or issue
  • publishing a journal, periodical article or textbook

Here are a few quick tips to help you fill in the log:

The log has to be filled in electronically, handwritten logs are no longer accepted.
  • Every activity must be listed separately.
  • Every activity must be accompanied with a date(s). Credit will not be given for any activity that is not associated with a date.
  • The number of hours that the activity took to complete must be listed in your application [eg: 2 hours, 2 days, 50 hour project etc.]
  • Activities must take place during the 3 year review period prior to your CHRP expiry date.
  • Do not use acronyms for companies, courses, institutions etc.
  • Full activity requirements must be met; partial points are not given.

    2. Re-Certification by National Professional Practice Assessment ® (NPPA)

Should you choose to re-certify by re-examination, you will be required to register for and complete the National Professional Practice Assessment ® within your 3-year recertification period. If you are successful in passing the exam (i.e. achieve a score of at least 70%), your CHRP designation will be maintained and you will be able to use the designation for an additional three-year period.

If you are not successful in recertifying (by log or by passing the exam) within your recertification period, you will be given a second and last chance to write the NPPA after your CHRP expiry date; however, you will have to register for the exam before your expiry date, for the next exam sitting.

To Recertify, please follow the steps outlined below:

    1. Login to your Member Profile on the HRIA website.
    2. Click on "Start the Recertification Process".
    3. Choose an option for renewal (Professional Development or NPPA)
    4. Download the Word version of the recertification log, fill it in and upload the complete log for the Professional Development option. For the NPPA route download the Recertification form, fill it in and then upload the form.
    5. Upload a recent resume.
    6. Submit payment for your Recertification Fee of $ 52.50 (including GST)
    7. If you have chosen the NPPA option you will be notified by email when your application has been approved.  At that point you can login and register for the NPPA online.

To obtain a Word copy of the Recertification Log in advance of recertifying, please follow the first three steps of the recertification process as outlined above and when you get to the fourth step, download the Word document; you can then go back to your profile and start the recertification process at a later date, prior to your expiry date, when you are ready to submit all the documents (complete log, resume and payment for the recertification fee).

    CHRP Recertification Audit:

In conjunction with the national requirements as established by the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA), the HRIA is required to perform annual audits on member recertification applications. As stated in the National CHRP Recertification Log, audits are conducted to ensure the integrity and standard of professionalism reflected in the granting of the CHRP designation. It is important to retain your supporting documentation for two years after submitting a recertification application. You will be notified by mail if selected for CHRP recertification Audit; click here for examples of recertification audit support documentation .

    Extensions:

CHRP renewal extensions may be granted for special circumstances:

    a) Short Term Extensions

Based on written requests, the HRIA may grant an extension of 30 days (maximum). Please email your request to rzamfir@hria.ca prior to your original expiry date. If your request is approved, you will be required to pay a Late Fee of $ 50.00+GST, in addition to the Recertification Fee of $ 50.00+GST

    b) Leaves of absence

Members who are granted maternity or disability leave from their workplace during a given recertification interval are entitled to apply for and receive an extension of that recertification interval for any length of time up to the lesser of the total length of the leave granted or one (1) year.

Applications for extension must be accompanied by written confirmation from the workplace of the type and term of leave granted. In the case of self-employed members, confirmation from a physician is required in lieu of an employer confirmation. Please email your request to rzamfir@hria.ca.
